Behind the Journal
An Ongoing Record.
Areven Journal is an independent editorial publication founded in Jakarta in 2022. Its scope is the documentation of everyday supplementation habits, nutritional awareness, and active lifestyle choices for men in Indonesia and the wider Southeast Asian context.
01 — The Publication
A Gap in Independent Coverage.
Marcus Chen founded Areven Journal after observing that independent, non-commercial editorial coverage of men's nutritional awareness topics was sparse in Southeast Asia. The dominant voices in the space were either commercially oriented product reviews or highly technical academic publications — neither of which served the majority of active men who were simply trying to build considered, evidence-informed supplement habits as part of a broader active lifestyle.
The editorial model of Areven Journal draws from long-form journalism and field documentation. Articles are observations, not directives. The publication documents what active men are doing with their supplement habits, what published nutritional research notes about the nutrients involved, and what the pattern of those habits suggests about men's relationship with nutritional awareness over time.
The publication operates without commercial relationships with supplement brands. Areven Journal does not accept paid placements, sponsored content, or affiliate arrangements. The editorial independence this affords is the foundation of the publication's value to its readership.
Since its founding, the journal has expanded to include contributions from guest writers including Reza Pratama and Adrian Webb, whose observations from active lifestyle contexts across Indonesia have broadened the editorial scope. The publication now covers a range of nutrients and supplement categories, maintaining its consistent focus on documented observation and evidence-informed perspective rather than prescriptive dietary guidance.

02 — The Editor
Marcus Chen
Marcus Chen is a Jakarta-based writer whose background spans long-form editorial journalism and independent nutritional research documentation. He began his own supplement journalling practice in 2020 after a shift toward a more structured active lifestyle, and the discipline of that daily record eventually became the foundation for Areven Journal's editorial approach.
His editorial method is observational. He does not offer directions or recommendations, but documents patterns: what active men in Jakarta and across Indonesia are including in their supplement habits, what the published nutritional literature notes about those choices, and what emerges from comparing habitual practice with evidence-informed understanding. The resulting articles are intended as a resource for men building their own nutritional awareness, not as a substitute for engaging with a qualified wellness professional.
Marcus holds a background in journalism and long-form writing. He is not a qualified nutrition professional, and Areven Journal is not a wellness service. It is an independent editorial publication, and its value is in the quality of its documentation and the independence of its perspective.
